CleanSpark Shutters 25MW Tennessee Bitcoin Mine Tied to GRIID Noise Dispute
CleanSpark will shut down a 25 MW Tennessee Bitcoin mining site tied to its GRIID acquisition under a lawsuit settlement reached in 2023.
The site, originally developed by Griid Infrastructure and later acquired by CleanSpark, was set to cease operations by March 26 under the terms of a settlement agreement reached with nearby residents, as previously reported. The dispute dates back to 2021, when residents filed lawsuits alleging excessive noise from the facility’s mining operations.
The shutdown marks a relatively small rollback for CleanSpark, which boasts 808 MW of total utilized power capacity across the U.S. CleanSpark acquired GRIID’s assets as part of its broader consolidation strategy during the downturn in mining economics, inheriting both operational capacity and legacy liabilities tied to site-level disputes.
The Tennessee facility had remained under scrutiny since the original lawsuit, with the settlement imposing a firm deadline for closure regardless of ownership changes. CleanSpark told local media outlets last month that it “will shut down operations in accordance with the settlement agreement and expects to remove equipment within the required 120-day period.”
CleanSpark mined 658 Bitcoin in March with an average operational hashrate of 47.3 EH/s. It disclosed active treasury management during the month, selling 905 Bitcoin through a mix of spot transactions and options exercises while acquiring 445 BTC via derivatives strategies. The company ended March with 13,561 Bitcoin on its balance sheet, slightly higher than the previous month.
